Learning Journals - how do you do them?

Hi all,

I was just wondering how you all (mainly in schools) present your learning journals for each of the children?

We've done learning journals where everything is filed in order to see progression but we've also had them split into eight sections, one for each area of learning and one for parents/carers contributions.

Any ideas which the preferred way is at the moment?

I can see the benefits of both but wondered what you all do??

We have ours in order so that it's a lot like a diary.

I didn't like trying to put it into sections as I try to think of the child in a more holistic way.

I sometimes feel the joy of the activity is that the children learn so much from various areas of learning without even realising it!!

 

Anyway our journals are in folders with poly pockets.

 

We have messed around a few times with them but generally come back to the same idea working best!

Hi prowlerchick,

I'm Nursery now but was in school and I have ended up doing the same in both! I put mine in date order, as I found (like Scarlettangel said) that often one observation will cover so many areas it would be tricky to choose which section to put it in.

Hello

I'm preschool based and yes the evidence and observations, parental and child input all goes in date order and there is often links to several areas of learning. It does compliment the tracking and assessment process in my setting.

I love learning journeys as children get to be involved in whats recorded. It is also great as a way to show parents how their child is progressing. As a practitioner, by collating evidence I can see what areas need revisiting, developing or promoting.

Have you looked at Tapestry online learning journals (on this site)? We have been using them for nearly two years now and they are fab!

our learning journeys only contain summative reports that are built over time showing the starting point to where they currently are. a few pics of big long term projects that they may have been involved in that show how multiple skills and developments have progressed over time.......we don't do small post it obs....our obs are predominantly narrative/longitudinal and done over a period of time to get a really good feel of the child.....and by doing them this, we find placing our children within the EYFS dev mat. is so much easier than if we did short snapshot obs that identified one skill.
