would anyone be able to share a copy of there weekly staff rotas (full time 8am-6pm) The Ofsted inspector said we are open 8 -6 all staff should be there 8-6 as there is no telling what time children will arrive and depart!

Just wondered how others do their rotas

Thanks

I don't understand what you want to know really. Staffing should be based on what children book. No one has 'surprises' surely ie. when children are turning up as this would be staffed for anyway so the number of staff on during the day will depend on how many children are booked in etc. on the register. You don't have your whole staff team in at the same time if you don't need them!Apologies if I have missed the point, it has been a long day!

We are open 7.30 to 6 and have a variety of staffing hours! not every child arrives at 7.30 so I wouldn't want all the staff in then. Likewise not all are there to 6. I break my start and leaving times into half hours; so I staff 7.30-8; 8-8.30 and 8.30-9. Then we have core hours of 9-3 and 12-3; then staff stay to 4; 4.30; 5; 5.30 and 6. We are very flexible with the hours the children attend, including shift patterns so no week is the same. Coupled with the fact we have about 120 children attending every day across 5 rooms (0-4) my weekly register and working out staff rotas takes a good few hours! My hubby made me a great spread sheet that totals up the children's attendance across the days so I just have to input any changes and it tells me how many children I have at each segment. then I have to staff according to ratios.

Two of my key staff are always there at 7.30 and the same at 6. The others share the earlies and lates out.

I do the same as Laura. We are open 55 hours a week and clearly staff can't work all of them. We are very flexible with childrens attendance and it would be nigh on impossible for keyworkers to be in every minute their key children are in. We try our best but some poor loves are with us every day from 7.30am - 6.00pm. We have to rely on all staff being observant to key moments for children who are not their key children. Fortunately we are a small team who communicate very well and readily share observations.

Same here. You couldn't possibly expect staff working in full day care to work every hour we're open! My staff work the same shifts all the time (although they sometimes arrange swaps between them to cover things like dental appointments etc). Other than making sure we are in ratio, there are enough qualified staff and that the key children / key staff system works as well as possible, you only need a certain number of staff at the beginning and end of the day.

Having said that, as owner and manager I work all day every day... :o

Go careful Stargrower and don't over do things. I am owner and manager and used to work 7am-7pm as a minimum but have reduced that now and allow myself to work less but the first five years were a real slog. I have a really good deputy now which makes a real diference.

im just wondering how you responded to this without calling them a rude name!!!! unless you are a drop in service you would presumably tell parents they have to wait if your staff are not there! do they come in at the exact times the children are due????

confused .....xxxxx
