I have a very mixed age class (R, 1, 2) and was wondering if anyone had any ideas for the reception children? I have the formal side of things covered, but was wondering if you could help with the independent activities and also some ideas for the role play area (which will be a time machine - not sure how it's going to look yet!). SueJ Posted October 30, 2013 Share Posted October 30, 2013 Have you got a local museum - ours came and did a visit bringing some old (1900's to about 1960's - old to the children) bits and pieces and some costumes for the children to dress up in. Following their visit we also put together an old artifacts treasure box with things like an old (heat it in the fire) iron, old scales and weights, old fashioned milk bottles, butter pats etc. these are brilliant for the children to explore and begin to get them thinking about "olden times" before ipads etc. We also made some butter and used the pats to shape it. Maybe parents have some old version of today's toys they would lend the class too, obviously if your time machine goes backwards it could also go forwards, so maybe the children could "invent" something for the future. For the time machine I would let all the children loose with as many resources as you can lay your hands on, boxes, tin foil, wheels, stickers, clocks, egg boxes, tubes, tubing. etc. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest Posted October 31, 2013 Share Posted October 31, 2013 Fantastic ideas - thank you, both! I am quite excited about the topic now I've thought about it a bit more... I think the time machine will be open-ended really so they can travel anywhere anytime! I know we have a group of boys who will want to travel back to the dinosaurs, but why not? If they're enthused, I'm happy! Thinking about having windows with different periods of history in, to scaffold their learning a little bit (mainly for the older ones actually). Thanks again! Guest Posted November 1, 2013 Share Posted November 1, 2013 Exactly... who do I go for? TARDIS seems a little obvious and I'm worried it will restrict the children. Picked up a clock, two ice cube trays (the underside looks like buttons and they are rounded rather than squared) and two pairs of the strange 80s neon glasses - all of which will go in the time machine in some way. Might go down the TARDIS route with random household objects being used for levers etc but allow them to explain what's what. I hope it is a great topic - I'm getting quite excited about it!
