Involving Children In Risk Assessments

Brain not working again!

I have been involving my nursery children in doing risk assessments; they have really enjoyed doing this and have their own clipboard with a sheet depicting simple pictures of gates, litter, 'sharp things' and fencing. They then make marks in the appropriate boxes (happy/sad face) and add their name.

But now I am putting their work in their L.J. and cannot find an appropriate 'Development Matters' statement to link it to keeping ourselves safe - it must be there somewhere!

Health and bodily awareness (40-60+m)?

Obviously this would included mark making but I am particularly looking for keeping ourselves safe.

Any help appreciated!

Some thoughts, the links are a bit tenous though!

 

Show increasing independence in selecting adn carrying out activities (PSED:DA:30-50)

Display high levels of involvement in activities. (PSED:DA:40-60)

Feel safe and secure, and show a sense of trust. (PSED:Making relationships:30-50)

Value and contribute to own well-being and self-control. (PSED: Making relationships: 40-60)

Understand what is right, what is wrong and why. (PSED: behaviour and self-control:40-60)

Show understanding of the need for safety when tackling new challenges. (Physical devpt:movement and space:40-60)

Avoid dangerous places and equipment (Physical devpt:movement and space:40-60)

Understand that equipment and tools have to be used safely. (Physical devpt: using equipment and materials:30-50)

Practise some appropriate safety measures without direct supervision. (Physical devpt:using equipment and materials:40-60)

 

Can you tell I'm fed up of planning and will do pretty much anything to avoid it at the moment?! :o Actually really like this way of getting them involved - will be pinching it if you don't mind?

Ooooo!!!!! I like you idea devonmaid especially now that froglet has told me what areas this covers. DId you draw the pictures or use clip art devonmaid. I feel excited about making this sheet tonight.

I used the digital camera to take photographs of some of the areas; I will upload the risk assessment if you would like it!

OK - please ask if you have any questions about the form!

The 'Troll's Bridge' is a photo I took - all other pictures are downloaded; the gate is identical to our own gates - I tried to photograph it but the downloaded picture was better!

Good luck with your design - feel free to adapt mine!

 

Just a thought - sometimes when 'Word' documents are uploaded things seem to 'move around' a bit. I will upload a PDF document, just in case!

That's lovely DevonMaid. Can I ask, what are the numbers down the right hand side?

When the children have marked the boxes they then count how many marks in each column e.g. they have marked 3 ticks/smiley faces and 2 crosses/sad faces; the numerals are there as an aid to writing them if they so wish - the 'tick' and 'cross' marks are also there as a means of reference. Hope that helps!
