Hello,

I just wondered if anyone had taught 'life cycles' or 'minibeasts' before and if you had any good ideas for them? I'm an NQT in a foundation stage unit so need ideas for both reception and nursery. We've got some planning from last year to fall back on but its always nice to have new ideas plus I'm a little unsure how to cover both in one half term!

Thanks :)

We are doing this topic after half term too. There are some good activities on the Topmarks website (under IWB activities, Foundation Stage Science) One of the key activitis we do is to have an incubator in school on loan from our local Pets Corner, and wait for the eggs to hatch, then we look after the chicks untill the Easter term when they go back. Later in the year we try to go and visit our chicks. It's really lovely and the children enjoy it so much, although it is dissapointing if none of them hatch. The owner comes in to set up the incubator and talk to the children about the life cycle, as well as care and responsibility. There are companies that offer this but it costs quite a bit, so if you have a farm or something similar nearby it might be worth getting in touch.
