Sue Palmer's book "Toxic childhood" has a chapter about the media and it's effects on childhood.
Chapter 9 the electronic village. At the end she references some further reading -
"The media diet for kids" by Teresa Orange and Louise O'Flynn

and

"Remotely Controlled:How television is damaging our lives and what we can do about it" by Aric Sigman (Vermillion 2005)

Not sure what they are like but Sue Palmers book is good.

She has also written an accompanying book for parents called "Detoxing Childhood".
