  1. Hi

I have been told by staff at my setting that they do too much work at home. What do other setting do? Are staff given time to do planning, or writing up observations at work. How is this managed/

Thank you any suggestions would be helpful

  2. Hi all

We have been using an online development system for about a year now, We have recently been informed that the company we currently use will not be offering the package any more. therefore We are currently trialling Tapestry, I was just wondering if anyone else has changed online systems. How would you best recommend transferring Learning journals onto Tapestry. I was currently thinking of doing a baseline from the last report that was completed on each child and then doing an over report also basic on the previous assessment. do you think that would be okay. Or does anyone else have any tips. As I am really struggling at the moment with transferring evidence from the previous online system to Tapestry ?????

    Hi

I was wondering if anyone can help? I am the manager of a pre-school and we have started to use tapestry today. Is there any way that you can see which area of learning you have completed? When you view next steps does it remove the steps you have already completed? Hope this makes sense it's been a long first day back !! Thanks in advance.

Hi there, I am just wondering if anyone at a Preschool has changed from being Committee-led to a Board of Directors, and if so, how was it? I would love to hear of anyones experience as we are thinking that we may need to go down this route. Any advice/tips welcome! Thank you.

Hi. Can anyone shed any light on training being given to maintained nurseries regarding 30 hours provision? In particular how to share this with parents too.

It appears that this is only being given to the private sector at present. If so why is this not being given to all parties?

  4. Dear All

I really need help. Is there any template to inform parents the use of tapestry and getting their consent from them. I looked into resource section and couldn't find any material.

Also would like to inform them restriction of use etc etc.. Any help to have policy on this also.

    Thank you

    Hello can anybody help please.

I am currently ofsted registered and based within two classrooms of a School building. From September we will be having our own portable building based on School site rather than inside the building.

I guess it probably will but does anybody know if this will require me re registering with Ofsted. We have recently been graded Outstanding by them and it was a lovely feeling thinking they may not have to come out for another 4years but guessing this may change now.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

We are excited to announce a new project from Altru - traditional tales for EYFS!

We've been working in schools for the last 11 years and have had many requests from teachers in Nursery and Reception to create something specifically for their pupils - so we have. The performance was trialed in 2 schools in December with fantastic results; the children loved the experience of being immersed in the story and teachers were amazed at how much the children learnt and developed as a result of being involved.

The performance is a participatory 45 minutes which involves watching the story of Hansel and Gretel, learning a song, asking and answering some questions about characters and recapping/retelling the story.

The performance is by 2 professional actor educators who lead the pupils through the story using storytelling techniques, original songs and lots of participation.

We think the performance is perfect for exploring traditional tales and storytelling structure and for developing children's imaginations and creativity.

We'd love to chat about how the project could work in your setting. For some reason i cannot upload the flyer image onto this page, but there is more information on our website: http://altru.co.uk/portfolio/hansel-gretel-eyfs-performance/ You can also find our contact details on the website.

Thanks for reading and hope to hear from you soon!

I'm putting out tentative feelers because I know this can be a contentious topic BUT I feel that my role as a (Reception) teacher is under threat because I am spending so much time managing the behaviour of a couple of children who are undergoing assessments to find out how best to meet their needs. This requires a large amount of paper work to be completed and submitted by the class teacher- me- to a variety of professionals: medical, speech and language, behaviour support, Ed. Psych, etc!

Already I have been informed that several of these agencies are under pressure and appointments to see the children have been made months ahead, cancelled and postponed.

I am very fortunate in that my school have agreed to fund teaching support for one of these children every morning- but they will not be able to do this indefinitely and I still have to cope with the afternoons.

I have a class of 30 children and as well as the two with serious behaviour issues there is one child with substantial physical problems and the usual mix of abilities and problems that are in any class.

I have been teaching for 30 years and I do feel that occurrences of behaviour issues are on the increase- ASD, Attachment disorder, ADHD, FASD, etc, etc- and this needs to be addressed.

Teachers are so good at putting up with situations and not making a fuss but I really feel that this is having a direct impact on the education of the children in my care.

If you feel the same please let me know- we need research and support put in place and the earlier the interventions the better or these poor children never find a place for themselves in society- and we all end up paying a far greater price.

  5. blog-0296069001478170391.jpgI am going to start this article by asking a question and then explaining my answer to this question. The question is: Why do we give parent's of children "free" childcare? The obvious answer is so that all children can benefit from an education from an early age. Educating children from a younger age should hopefully improve the development of more and more children and this is seen as a positive and fair thing to do. Taking away parents requirement to pay for childcare gives every child the same opportunity and morally this is correct and pretty much unquestionable. However, many people, especially tax payers who do not require this free childcare, may voice their objections from time to time.

If we bring Politics into this, and we should, we have Democrats to thank for this fair approach to people's needs. I happen to agree that this seems the best way to run things although at the same time I do not agree with this economically! We have the financial systems to blame for this and huge changes here are required if we ever want to move forward as a stronger society. Should money really be more important than a person's life? We have Billionaires on the one hand, and starvation on the other!

Back on topic and my answer to the original question. I feel the Government and investing in our young people rather than funding them. The ultimate aim from education is to produce more intelligent and more useful members of society. If this investment pays off, then the government would have helped to create people who are capable of getting a job that pay's well or entrepreneurs and therefor paying taxes for 40-50 years of their lives. They should hopefully increase the Countries productivity and be a huge benefit economically. They hope to reduce welfare payments in the future with this increased and capable workforce being invested in today. We always here about a Countries GDP and this seems like a very important indicated of how investable a Country is. The more outside investment into our country again improves our economic outlook.

To summerise, we have 2 main reasons for funding children, economics and humanity. It seems, economics are always put before humanity as we can see from the distribution of wealth in our Country. Many people relying on Food Banks whilst others have heated swimming pools is a clear indication of this. Yes it is fair to say some people work harder or they have more luck in life financially and others, whom do no nothing to help themselves financially and it is just the way it is and always will be. "That's Life" as Frank Sinatra sung so elegantly, whilst getting very rich in the process!

So, is this 30 Hours Free Childcare going to change anything?

So four days in how's it going? the idea of process art is beginning to gather pace.

This is the sot of thing that I'm trying to produce! that I'm trying to avoid!!!

    IMG_7312.JPG

This picture made me laugh as I reckon the child who created to penguin on the bottom row fourth from the left was desperately trying to be different!

So day one was paint and scrapers....children exploring colours and colour mixing/large muscle movements/mark making etc etc

Day two ...we had been given some sweetie jars so the children popped a piece of paper inside and some blobs of paint and a few beans and gave it a quick shake...ta-da a bean picture! The most tricky bit of this was trying to get the lids on and off...we definitely need to do more wrist twisting sort of activities!

Day three I was outside so I just set up the table covered in paper with pens/pencils and crayons for them to explore.

Day four was really messy with balls of bubble wrap and some netting I had left over from some packaging...I chose to only have two colour to start with which worked well. The afternoon group are more tentative so needed encouragement to experiment but most of us went home covered in paint (including me!!)

I have taken pictures but I cant seem to upload them here

So far so good...lets see what happens next week! ;)

    Hi,

I am currently a manager at a committee run preschool and before and after school. The setting is situated on a school site, operates exceptionally well and is financially stable. However my concerns are what would happen if the school decided that they wanted to take over, who would have the power to make this decision and how would it affect the current staff?

    Thanks in anticipation

  7.

I am not sure if i'm not understanding snapshots right but with the above assessment box i can easily see that all the areas of learning are being covered and any gaps in the learning, but i can't seem to find how to do this on snapshots, What am i doing wrong?

    Hi Everyone,

I do not really know anyone in here. However i just loved this site as it has helped me gain immense knowledge and help me learn more about the EYFS world.

To start with, I am Raji and I love working with children, so much so that I dont care if I dont get paid for it. Currently volunteering at a setting and also trying to complete my Level 3 CACHE alongside.

Being in Dubai I come across a cultural mix of children from all around the world. I have never been happier as I realised my belief to be true. We are all alike no matter which part of the world we belong to. As a human child all the children behave according to the age and stage of development.

And I find it fortunate to experience this rich variety of children I can guide and care for.

Back in India where I originally hail from, our educational culture is vastly different from other parts of the world. More conservative I must say and I did believe that it is the best form of education till recently until I started to notice the level of pressure the children had to undergo as they kept moving to the higher grades.

I have seen them succumb to the result pressure for board exams (something equivalent to the GCSE or IGCSE after which they can apply to a university to pursue higher studies). So much they get into the rut that they forget to live their childhood!

Hopefully someday I will be able to contribute to initiate changes in the field of education in my country. Maybe a day will come when I get to see children from my nation, play in large playgrounds and experience nature and let down their hair, dirty their hands and just enjoy being children, gazing the sunset or the formation of the birds flying in the sky.

There's a long way to go but I am happy that I atleast have a dream and a reason to look forward to life.

I will keep questioning the various ways of education and practices and would love to see your comments and opinions on the same.

    Hello,

I am new to this Forum and was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction to find some information on creating a Policy for Facebook use in a setting.

What are your procedures for posting photos on your pre-school Facebook page and what stipulations do you have for staff usage?

Any help or advise would me much appreciated as I have looked everywhere to try and find some guidance.

    Thank-you

    blog-0881873001447244370.pngHi

This is the first time I have posted on this site so I hope that I will be able to get my question across successfully! I have gone back to teaching Reception after working as a supply teacher for 2 years whilst my daughters were little, and work as a job share in a small school. At the moment I am feeling really confused about best practise in Early Years. What I would really like to know is what does the layout of your day look like and how do you manage the continuous provision in your class. Our day currently looks like this:

    8:40 - 9:00 Early morning activities

9:00 - 9:20 Phonics followed by 2 group guided reading whilst the rest of the children are in continuous provision. TA works on next steps with chn outside and then I do the same after group work.

    10:20 - 10:30 snack and story

    10:30 - 10:45 Play

10:45 - 11:00 Literacy/Numeracy whole class then T and TA work on guided groups whildt the rest of the class work on lit/maths related activities.

    11:45 - 12:00 Number rhymes/songs/games

    12:00 - 1:00 Lunch

    1:00 - 1:15 Handwriting

    1:15 - 1:30 EAD/KUW/Circletime

1:30 - 2:30 Guided group work whilst the rest of the class work in continuous provision.

    2:30 - 3:00 Assembly

    3:00 Home

What I find difficult to organise is the amount of setting up that I currently do. Should I be setting out activities that run all day or should I set up phonics activities after phonics then maths after maths? Should I be setting up at all or should the children have free access to resources?

Please help as I feel my head is about to explode!!!

    Thanks in advance!

I am Head of a large international early years department.

    I have 8 fs1 classes ( nursery ages)

    12 fs2 classes ( reception classes)

in total I have 500 children.

We have held traditional parents meetings for our children but i am keen to make it a less confrontational time.

I like the meet and greet type forum whereby the child takes the children around the class and show the work.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Does any one have any ideas to give it a community feel . We are new and need to build up the feeling of family.

    any ideas gratefully received.

    xx
